EDINBURG – A Mexican national is facing charges of attempted murder of a peace officer with a firearm.

Oscar Pena Lopez was formally arraigned on Monday.

The Hidalgo County District Attorney’s Office says he’s accused of shooting at a Department of Public Safety trooper in Las Milpas in mid-October.

Troopers told CHANNEL 5 NEWS Pena lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a chain-linked fence near the intersection of Anaya Road and Mould Street.

He then fled on foot and exchanged gunfire with them.
