UPDATE 2/19: Roma's Assistant Police Chief describes how his officers found a Mexican national, who died at a McAllen hospital Monday.

"He was under the bridge, partly in the water but mostly out of the river. He was just laying there in the river bank, when my officer arrived, the man picked up his head and said that he needed medical attention."

A Customs and Border Protection statement says the man had liver and heart disease.

He was in federal custody because he was in the country illegally.

He reportedly died two weeks after hospitalization.

ROMA - A person apprehended by U.S. Customs and Border Protection earlier this month, died Monday. 

On Feb. 2, the 45-year-old Mexican national encountered Roma police, near the Roma Port of Entry, according to a CBP press release.

The individual requested medical attention and was taken to Mission Regional Medical Center.

According to the press release, medical staff cleared the person and they were taken to the Rio Grande City Border Patrol Station, where the Mexican national was taken into custody for illegal re-entry.

Feb. 3, during a welfare check the person asked for medical attention and was transported to McAllen Medical Center.

Medical staff there diagnosed the individual with cirrhosis of the liver and congestive heart failure. The Mexican national stayed at McAllen Medical Center until their death Monday morning.
