PHARR – For about two decades, Carl and Patty Scalise worked side-by-side in the restaurant business. However, these days they now operate their own pizzeria.

They named their new venture Scalisi’s Chicago Style Pizza and More and opened it in Pharr.

“I was born and raised in Chicago. Went to the University of Illinois. My dad was also from Chicago, so this is what we grew up with,” Patty Scalise said.

“And I never really noticed how many people from Chicago are really down here,” Carl Scalise said.

They said their restaurant is bringing a different taste and environment to the Rio Grande Valley. The menu covers just about anything Italian and the walls are covered with Chicago memorabilia.

“When you eat here you never leave wanting more. You’re always full but always leave room for dessert,” said Osvaldo Vargas, the restaurant’s cook.

In their relatively short time open, they have developed a following.

“I like everything on the pizza. That’s what I enjoy the most,” customer Joseph de Leon shared.

“I’ve been coming here three times and it’s awesome. Everything is good on the menu,” said Saundra de Leon.

The restaurant is located on Nolana just east of PSJA North High School in Pharr. And after 20 years, Carl and Patty say they are looking to the future.

“A lot of people ask us if we’re a chain or franchise out of Chicago and I tell them no, not yet. Hopefully, we will but it will be a franchise out of Pharr,” she said.
